When planning a sakura trip in Miyagi, one common point of confusion is the difference between Funaoka Castle Park and Shiroishigawa Hitome Senbonzakura.
They are close to each other and often visited together, but they are not the same place.
The simple version is:
Shiroishigawa Hitome Senbonzakura is the long riverside cherry blossom corridor.
Funaoka Castle Park is the hilltop park and viewpoint nearby.
If you have enough time, visit both. If you are short on time, prioritize the riverbank.

What is Shiroishigawa Hitome Senbonzakura?
Shiroishigawa Hitome Senbonzakura refers to the cherry blossom corridor along the Shiroishi River.
The area is famous for its long riverside rows of sakura, often seen with the Zao mountain range in the background. This is the place to go if you want the classic long sakura walk.
The experience is about walking beside the river, seeing the blossoms continue into the distance, and finding your own favourite photo or picnic spot.
What is Funaoka Castle Park?
Funaoka Castle Park, also called Funaoka Castle Ruins Park, is a hilltop park in Shibata.
It has many cherry trees of its own, but its biggest advantage is the elevated perspective. From the park, you can look out over the Shiroishi River embankment and see the long sakura corridor from above.
The park also has photogenic sakura scenes of its own, especially around the slope car tracks.
Funaoka Castle Park vs Shiroishigawa Hitome Senbonzakura: which is more impressive?
For me, the Shiroishigawa riverside walk was more impressive.
The reason is not that Funaoka Castle Park was disappointing. It was a strong stop in its own right. But the riverbank walk felt more immersive. The blossoms were low, close, and continuous, and the walk had that “sakura never ends” feeling.
Funaoka Castle Park was valuable in a different way. It gave us the wider view, the hilltop perspective, and some beautiful sakura scenes around the slope car tracks.
So I would not frame this as one good place and one bad place. It is more like this:

If you only have two hours, which should you choose?
Choose the riverbank.
If you only have a short time, I would prioritize Shiroishigawa Hitome Senbonzakura because it gives you the most essential experience of the area: the long line of sakura along the Shiroishi River.
You can still add Shibata Senokyo Bridge if your route allows it, especially if you are starting from Funaoka Station.
If you have four to five hours, visit both
If you have half a day, the best plan is to combine them.
A good first-time route is:
Funaoka Station → Funaoka Castle Park → Shibata Senokyo Bridge → Shiroishi River walk → Ogawara direction
Or, if you prefer a quieter start:
Ogawara Station → Shiroishi River walk → Shibata Senokyo Bridge → Funaoka Castle Park → Funaoka Station
The first route is better if Funaoka Castle Park is a priority. The second route is better if you prefer a quieter riverside start.
Which side is less crowded?
In our experience, the Ogawara side felt quieter.
The Funaoka side is more convenient for Funaoka Castle Park and Shibata Senokyo Bridge, so it naturally attracts more visitors. The Ogawara side can be better if you want a calmer riverside walk and are okay with walking farther.
Is the Funaoka Castle Park slope car necessary?
No, but it can be a nice experience if it is operating.
The slope car ride is short, but it passes through a cherry blossom tunnel during sakura season. I rode it on a previous visit, and even though the ride itself was short, the feeling of moving through the blossoms was memorable.
On our 2026 visit, the slope car was closed, and we walked up instead. The walk was easy for us, so I would not skip Funaoka Castle Park just because the slope car is not running.
Because operation status can change, check the current-year official information before building your plan around the slope car.

Final recommendation
You do not really need to choose between Funaoka Castle Park and Shiroishigawa Hitome Senbonzakura unless your time is very limited.
The riverbank is the main highlight. Funaoka Castle Park adds the viewpoint and a different type of sakura scenery. Together, they make the visit feel more complete.
If you only have time for one, choose the Shiroishi River walk. If you have four to five hours, do both.
