Hotel Matsushima Taikanso Review: Is This Bay-View Matsushima Hotel Worth It?

View of Matsushima Bay from Hotel Matsushima Taikanso

Quick verdict

Hotel Matsushima Taikanso is worth considering if you want more than a simple place to sleep in Matsushima. We stayed here for four nights, and even though it was the most expensive accommodation of our trip, I would stay again at a similar price.

The main reason is the overall experience: a spacious bay-view room, a relaxing resort atmosphere, a public bath with a view of Matsushima Bay, good buffet meals, and easy parking for exploring Matsushima and Oku-Matsushima by car.

It is not the best choice if you are trying to keep costs low or if you want to stay right beside the train station. But if you want a comfortable, quieter base with views, I think Taikanso is one of the more memorable places to stay in Matsushima.

Our stay at Hotel Matsushima Taikanso

Japanese-Western room at Hotel Matsushima Taikanso with beds and tatami space

We stayed at Hotel Matsushima Taikanso from April 6 to April 10 for four nights. Our room was a Japanese-Western combination room, with two Western beds and a tatami area.

It was the most expensive hotel we stayed at on that trip. We spent around ¥45,000 per night for two people, with breakfast included and one seafood buffet dinner during our stay. That is why I do not want to casually say this hotel is “good value” for everyone. It is not a budget stay.

But for us, it was worth it.

We used Matsushima as a base not only for Matsushima itself, but also for Oku-Matsushima and Sendai. For that kind of trip, Taikanso worked very well.

One important booking detail: Taikanso is better thought of as a meal-included resort hotel rather than a simple room-only hotel. At the time I checked, the hotel’s own FAQ said it did not offer accommodation-only plans, and that plans included either breakfast or dinner and breakfast.

The room: spacious, modern and worth booking with a bay view

Our room was one of the biggest reasons I liked the hotel.

It felt modern, spacious, and comfortable. The bathroom and toilet areas were in good condition, and the room did not feel like an old hotel room that only survives because of the view.

The Japanese-Western layout also made a real difference. The Western beds were comfortable, and the tatami area gave us extra space to sit, have tea, and do a little work. It made the room feel more like a place to settle in, not just somewhere to sleep.

Our room faced sunrise, and the view was nice throughout the day. The view from our specific room was a little obstructed, but still very enjoyable. If your budget allows, I would prioritize a bay-view room.

This is important because Taikanso has different room and plan types. When booking, do not assume every room will have the same view. Check whether the room is sea-facing, mountain-facing, renovated, Japanese-style, Western-style, or Japanese-Western before confirming.

If you are not sure what this room type means, I have a separate guide to Japanese-Western hotel rooms in Japan.

The bay view is the main reason to stay here

Sunrise view over Matsushima Bay from Hotel Matsushima Taikanso

Matsushima is famous for its bay and small pine-covered islands, so staying somewhere with a view changes the feeling of the trip.

At Taikanso, the bay view is not limited to the room. The common areas also have wide, open views of Matsushima Bay. The lobby seating area was especially nice, and it made the hotel feel relaxing even when we were not in the room.

This is where Taikanso felt different from staying in a standard hotel in Sendai. In Sendai, you may get more restaurants, better train convenience, and cheaper hotel options. But you probably will not get this quiet resort feeling with Matsushima Bay in front of you.

For me, the view was not just a bonus. It was part of why the hotel was worth choosing.

If you are still deciding between the station area, a bay-view hotel, and Sendai, I have a separate guide to where to stay in Matsushima.

Breakfast: resort-style buffet with a bay view

Breakfast was a strong point.

It felt like a resort-style breakfast rather than a basic business hotel breakfast. There was a large buffet selection, with both Japanese and Western items, plus some local dishes.

The breakfast area also had a bay view, which made the morning feel more special. This matters more than it may sound. When you are staying in a scenic place like Matsushima, having breakfast with a view helps the hotel feel connected to the destination.

If you are the type of traveller who likes slow mornings, a good breakfast, and not rushing out immediately, this is one of the reasons Taikanso works well.

Dinner: choose the seafood buffet if available

Seafood buffet dinner at Isana restaurant in Hotel Matsushima Taikanso

Taikanso has multiple dining options, so your dinner experience may depend on the plan you book.

We only had the seafood buffet dinner once, so I would not claim that I tested every dinner option over several nights. But the seafood buffet we had was genuinely good, and it is the dinner option I would suggest looking for if you enjoy seafood.

The restaurant is called Isana (磯魚). It is a Japanese-style seafood buffet restaurant. In our experience, the seafood selection was wide, and the sashimi and grilled seafood especially stood out. When we booked, our plan did not specify the type of buffet. At check-in, we were assigned the Chinese, Western, and Japanese buffet, but we asked to switch to the seafood buffet and were able to do so free of charge. However, some plans may specify the buffet type, so you should check with the hotel first if the seafood buffet is important to you.

One practical note: the seafood buffet restaurant had a nice atmosphere, but it did not have the same bay view as the breakfast/standard buffet area. So I would think of it this way:

  • Breakfast: good selection plus bay view
  • Seafood buffet dinner: better seafood focus and atmosphere, but no bay view

If seafood is important to you, check the exact meal plan before booking instead of assuming all dinner-included plans are the same.

If this kind of meal plan is new to you, I have a separate guide to how Japanese hotel dinner buffets usually work.

Public bath: a real highlight, not just a facility

Open-air bath with Matsushima Bay view at Hotel Matsushima Taikanso

The public bath was another highlight of our stay.

It had a view of Matsushima Bay, and the outdoor bath made the experience feel more special. This is one of the reasons Taikanso felt more like a resort hotel than just a large accommodation property.

This hotel does not have a natural hot spring, but for me, the important part was the relaxing bath with a Matsushima Bay view.

Lobby, gift shop and other facilities

The lobby seating area was useful because of the view. It was not just a waiting area — it was somewhere you could actually sit and enjoy the scenery.

We also used the gift shop. Since the hotel is not right beside the station area, having a shop inside the hotel was convenient.

For a normal stay, the most useful facilities are probably the bath, lobby seating, restaurant areas, and shop. There may be other seasonal or paid facilities, but those were not the main reason I would recommend staying here.

Location: better with a car, but there is a shuttle

Taikanso is slightly away from the main station area. This is the main downside.

If you want to step out of your hotel and immediately walk around Matsushima-Kaigan Station, Zuiganji Temple, Godaido, restaurants, and the pier area, a station-area hotel will feel more convenient.

But if you are driving, Taikanso works very well. We mostly drove, and parking was easy during our stay. The hotel parking lot was large, so we did not feel stressed about coming back by car.

For train travellers, the hotel provides shuttle access from Matsushima-area stations. It does not have the same convenience as staying beside Matsushima-Kaigan Station, but the shuttle helps reduce the downside. The free shuttle runs about every 30 minutes and is about a 5-minute ride from Matsushima-Kaigan Station. The shuttle also serves JR Matsushima Station. Individual travellers generally do not need to reserve, but seats are limited, and groups should book ahead.

So I would summarize the location like this:

Taikanso is not the most convenient hotel if you want to walk everywhere, but it is very practical if you have a car or do not mind using the shuttle.

Using Taikanso as a base for Matsushima, Oku-Matsushima and Sendai

For us, four nights felt just right because we were using the hotel as a broader base.

We were not only seeing central Matsushima. We also used it for Oku-Matsushima and Sendai. The hotel’s quieter setting, bigger room, bay views, easy parking, and relaxing bath made it a comfortable place to come back to each day.

That said, most travellers probably do not need four nights if they only want to see Matsushima itself.

For a simple Matsushima visit, I think one to two nights would be enough for most people. One night gives you the hotel experience and enough time for the main sights. Two nights gives you a slower pace and more time for Oku-Matsushima.

Four nights makes more sense if you want to use Matsushima as a relaxing base rather than treating it as a quick stop.

Was it worth staying here instead of Sendai?

For us, yes.

Staying in Sendai would probably have been cheaper and more convenient for city food, shopping, and train connections. But that was not the experience we wanted for this part of the trip.

Taikanso was worth it because of the view, the relaxing resort feeling, the bigger room, the outdoor bath with a bay view, and easier access to Oku-Matsushima by car.

If your trip is mostly about Sendai, stay in Sendai. But if Matsushima and Oku-Matsushima are a meaningful part of your trip, staying at Taikanso can make the whole stay feel more scenic and relaxed.

Best for

Hotel Matsushima Taikanso is best for:

  • Families with kids who want more room and a comfortable hotel base
  • Couples who want a scenic, relaxing stay
  • Travellers with a car
  • People visiting both Matsushima and Oku-Matsushima
  • Travellers who enjoy hotel baths with a view
  • People who want a quieter place instead of staying in Sendai
  • Travellers who are willing to pay more for a good-quality hotel experience

Skip if

I would skip Taikanso if:

  • You are travelling on a tight budget
  • You mainly want the cheapest place to sleep
  • You want to be right beside the train station
  • You plan to spend almost all your time in Sendai
  • You do not care about the room view, hotel bath, or resort atmosphere

If you only need a simple base near the station, Taikanso may be more hotel than you need.

What I would do differently next time

Honestly, not much.

I would stay at Taikanso again. I would still choose a bay-view room. And if the seafood buffet plan is available and the price makes sense, I would choose that dinner option again.

The one thing I would be careful about is checking the exact room and meal plan before booking. The view and dinner type matter here. If you accidentally book a room without a bay view when you expected one, or a different meal plan when you expected the seafood buffet, your impression of the hotel could be very different.

Final recommendation

Hotel Matsushima Taikanso is not the cheapest way to visit Matsushima, but it is a strong choice if you want the hotel itself to be part of the experience.

For us, the combination of the bay-view room, sunrise view, spacious Japanese-Western layout, resort-style breakfast, seafood buffet, public bath, lobby views, and easy parking made the higher price feel worthwhile.

I would especially recommend it to families, couples, road-trippers, and travellers who want a quieter Matsushima base with a view.

If you are deciding between staying in Sendai and staying in Matsushima, Taikanso is the kind of hotel that makes staying in Matsushima feel meaningfully different.
